Research
The main interest of my laboratory is to understand the molecular pathways that lead to cellular dysfunction in gliomas and extensive neuronal death in late-onset neurodegenerative diseases (e.,g., Alzheimer"™s, Parkinson"™s, Huntington"™s, the prion diseases, etc.). My laboratory has unravelled some of the basic mechanisms of organellar biogenesis, inter-organellar dynamics (like crosstalk between ER-mitochondria, autophagosome-amphisome-lysosome) as well as intra-organellar dynamics (in organelles like ER and mitochondria). From a socio-economic point of view, diseases of the brain, including cancers, neuropathies and neurodegenerative diseases are on the rise globally, including India. Hence multidimensional basic research, as highlighted in our studies is an absolute necessity for better therapeutics to alleviate the pain, suffering and associated social stigma. High resolution and super resolution imaging of cells, animal systems and patient samples, along with other latest techniques in cell and molecular biology are extensively used to study basic molecular mechanisms that get altered under pathological conditions.
