Large Area Cathode Pad Chambers

Introduction & Detector working

Large Area Cathode Pad Chambers A Cathode Pad Chamber is a multi-wire proportional chamber (MWPC) whose two cathodes are segmented on pads. We have built the largest Cathode Pad Chambers for the 2nd Tracking Station of Muon Spectrometer Collaboration of ALICE. These detectors have intrinsic position resolution of 50µm and an outer radius of 1.25 mt. During 2005 – 06, ten such detectors with 2,82,000 read-out pads were fabricated in HEP Division. This is the first large scale detector production at SINP.(View picture.)

Working Principle.

Cathode pad chambers are use to deter-mined the position of particle traversing the detector. When a charged particle passes through the active gas volume of the detector, it produces ionization (electron ion pair) along its trajectories. These primary electrons drift towards the nearest anode wire, where avalanche take place. The resulting ion cloud induce s a charge distribution on the cathode pads close to the avalanche location by capacitive coupling. The pads of specific geometric shape are used to sample the charge induced on the cathode planes. The relative values of the induced charges on the pads determine the position of the charged particle passing through the detector.
